Church History
In the early 1800's there was no Travelers Rest Missionary Baptist
Church. The Ralph Foster family moved into a community approximately
seven miles southwest of Spartanburg, S.C., near the South Tyger
River. Realizing the need for a place to worship GOD, neighbors
organized and erected a Brush Arbor Church. This particular spot,
with many beautiful oak trees, had been the center of attraction
for travelers to take shelter and rest. As the community continued
to grow, land was purchased and a church building erected. In
search for a name, Louise Foster, wife of Ralph Foster, suggested
the name Travelers RestThe first Travelers Rest Baptist Church
was built in 1876. In 1961 the church moved across the river and
built a new sanctuary. In 1996 the church built a sanctuary next
to the old sanctuary.
The church has had the following pastors: Rev. Calvin Cash, Rev. Milton Ware, Rev. Went Wllace, Rev. Whittenburg, Rev. B.F. Stewart, Rev. Green, Rev. Wofford, Rev. N.J. Alexander, Rev. Henry Dawkins, and Rev. Leon Wright.
Travelers Rest Baptist Church has grown since its founding
days. Today the congregation consist of members, with backgrounds
and cultures coming from all over the world.
